Praying the Scripture, Isaiah 35.3-10

Kids, Mark 7.31-37 (deaf mute, Ephphatha)

Message, Mark 8.1-10 (feeding the 4000)

Isaiah 35:3-10

Strengthen the weak hands,

and make firm the feeble knees.

Say to those who are of a fearful heart,

“Be strong, do not fear!

Here is your God.

He will come with vengeance,

with terrible recompense.

He will come and save you.”

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,

and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

then the lame shall leap like a deer,

and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.

For waters shall break forth in the wilderness,

and streams in the desert;

the burning sand shall become a pool,

and the thirsty ground springs of water;

the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp,

the grass shall become reeds and rushes.

A highway shall be there,

and it shall be called the Holy Way;

the unclean shall not travel on it,

but it shall be for God’s people;

no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray.

No lion shall be there,

nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;

they shall not be found there,

but the redeemed shall walk there.

And the ransomed of the LORD shall return,

and come to Zion with singing;

everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;

they shall obtain joy and gladness,

and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Prayer from the Rite of Milan

Though he was God most high,

he descended upon earth to blot out our sins;

though coming to set us free

our Lord was bound as a criminal

and sold for money as a slave.

Though judge of heaven’s angels,

he was arraigned before a human judge

to free the human race, his own creation,

from the power of death.

It is right and good, our joy and our salvation

to give you thanks.

SERIES: Defiled

This begins a message series looking at a short arc of stories in Mark that describe Jesus ministry among “others,” specifically Gentiles. At the beginning of this arc, Jesus disputes the matters of ritual purity and defilement with the Pharisees. At the conclusion of this arc, Jesus warns his disciples against the “yeast” of the Pharisees and of Herod. In the middle are a series of miracles, both private and public, in which Jesus demonstrates compassion for and welcome of those who are “other,” that is, those who are considered as unclean or unholy by virtue of who they are. The children’s stories in this cycle come mostly from the ministry of the prophet Elisha and his work with persons typically rejected or marginalized: an enemy general with leprosy, a recent widow, and four lepers living together outside the city walls.
