Paul
on being content:
Godliness with contentment is great gain,
1 Tm 6.6-8
With food and clothing we shall be content
ConTENT
versus CONtent
The stuff that fills things or being
filled
Blessing ourselves weekly, love of God,
peace of Christ, fellowship of the Spirit
Can never be taken from us, no matter what
I have learned to be content!
Our
first place in Columbia SC, short term rent
      Tub with no shower
Lawn moved when the light is turned on at
night
      Mattress with springs poking through
And
we loved it!
Paul
has every reason to be DIScontent
He is in prison – again
Maybe they remember what it was like when
he was in prison in Philippi
Paul is NOT saying that he wants to be in
prison the rest of his life
Paul is NOT saying that we stop standing
up against, resisting evil, injustice, and oppression
Today’s evils include the ration of African
American men in prison compared to white dudes like me
Stand up against death by opioid crisis

Paul
has learned what is is to
      Have little, have much
      Fast, feast
      Abase, abound
He
had learned the skills to do BOTH (most of the time we may only master one side
of it)
There is entitlement both in poverty and
wealth
Resources
to learn contentment
Wonder: whales with feet, birds able to
sing two notes at once
      Promise/time: Ro 8.18, our present
suffering is not worthy to compare with the glory to be revealed in us
Choosing to do without (as Paul did, even
when he had enough)
Giving and receiving – sharing in the
cycle with others and with God, learning to give and to receive

May, announcing his mother’s death:
It is well with my soul

No matter how God chooses to bless us,
We are already satisfied (Paul’s language
here)
