In
the Christian tradition, one answer to WHERE we find God is among God’s people:
If you want to meet the Living Stone, then let me introduce you to the living
stones.
The “you’s” are PLURAL, the verbs
are plural
Focus
text: 1 Peter 2:5  like living
stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy
priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus
Christ.
      House, Priesthood, Sacrifices
      Metaphors borrowed from Hebrew
temple/tabernacle worship

House:
·       God
walking w/ original couple in the garden (Genesis 3)
·       Leviticus
26:11-12
 I will place my
dwelling in your midst, and I shall not abhor you.  12 And I will walk among you, and
will be your God, and you shall be my people.
·       Ezekiel
37:27
 My dwelling place
shall be with them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
·       John
1:14
 And the Word became
flesh and lived among us,
·       Revelation
21:3
 See, the home of God
is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself
will be with them;
God made us to share the world with us
God made us to live among us, for us to be
God’s home
Want to find God? Check out God’s people.
Want to help people find God? Introduce
them to God’s people
Priesthood:
Inheritance is the LORD, not the land
Deuteronomy
18:1-2
The levitical priests, the whole tribe of
Levi, shall have no allotment or inheritance within Israel. They may eat the
sacrifices that are the LORD’s portion  2
but they shall have no inheritance among the other members of the community;
the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised them.

Called to bless & pray
2
Chronicles 30:27
Then the priests and the Levites stood up and
blessed the people, and their voice was heard; their prayer came to his holy
dwelling in heaven.
Priesthood
is for all God’s people
Unity of the church – better together:
make us one

Sacrifice:
Acceptable
Perfect,
unblemished first born male
      (who here?)
Hosea
allusion – his illegitimate children
      Lo-ammi, “not my people”
      Lo-ruhamah, “not loved”
1
Peter 2:10
 Once you were not a
people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now
you have received mercy.
      Now, all God’s people ACCEPTABLE
Our
pattern in all of this is Jesus, the Living Stone:
the home of God among humans
the priest who connects people with God
      the acceptable sacrifice
And,
in his only stone home, a burial cave, the chief salvation miracle takes place.
The
order of things is changed:
the
Tomb devours death
and
not the dead;
the
house of death
becomes
the mansion of life.
      St Peter Chrysologus

And,
in that mansion of life, in that stone home, there’s a room, a house, prepared
for you.
